IIT Bombay Incubation center gets a CEO

In order to increase private sector investment for its incubation projects , Now IIT Bombay has appointed an investment banker as CEO of the SINE : Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship .

The newly appointed CEO Mr. Sushanto Mitra , has spent several years as an investment banker . His earlier stints include working at Techcap India and Meghraj Financial Services India .

Other IITs also have incubation centers but only IIT Delhi had a Managing Director so far .

These incubation centers promote and fund innovative projects by the student . The SINE's corpus has been contributed by IIT-B , Government and alumni . Currently , 17 companies are in its portfolio . Its incubation model is equity-cum-royalty based . The insttute takes 8 to 10 % stake in firms .

One can expect more organised investments into incubations now . I hope that other colleges in India will follow this and hence being Entrepreneur will be easier for young minds .

Such moves really help students . But , it is too late for Indian Institutes . Well , hoping for something like Google ( A Standford University Output ) !!

Lalu Turned Blogger

After Amitabh Bachchan and other bollywood stars , Blogging is going to be hot trend among Indian Politicians .

The first politician-turned-blogger is Lalu Prasad Yadav !

Unexpected !!

A report published on Economic Times says that
Lalu is learnt to be in talks with the Mumbai-based Digital Media Convergence for starting a weblog after news of Democratic Presidential hopeful Barack Obama’s blog impressed him.

The blog, says a senior company executive, would be put up at mypopkorn.com and the minister would post the blog about twice a week. The blog is expected to start any time this week and Lalu is reportedly very excited about it.

Relativity Redefined

I couldn't stop myself from posting about a nice explanation of Theory of relativity .

That is here :

When you are courting a nice girl an hour seems like a second. When you sit on a red-hot cinder a second seems like an hour. That’s relativity.

- Albert Einstein

I found this on the weblog of Gaurav.

Doubt cleared ?

Your Comments on Orkut can land you in jail

Ever thought "Your Comments on Orkut can land you in Jail" ?

Yes ! It is true and now , there are laws for that in India too .

Please be careful while commenting in any community or even in scrapbook on Orkut as it may land you in jail . Surely , when they are obscene about someone .

Rahul Vaid of Gurgaon ( India ) was arrested due to same reason . A Report by Neha Sharma in Today's ( 31st May , 2008 ) Hindustan Times ( Delhi Edition ) says that the boy commented on a community " I Hate Sonia Gandhi" and got caught by police .

Here is the scree-shot of that report !

I searched Orkut for that community , but couldn't find it ! Perhaps , it get deletion !!

My interest in blogging developed after reading about a blogger in a newspaper . And , it is not just me , there are thousands of bloggers for whom , he is the perfect ideal . He is just like the God for Indian Bloggers .

This blogger is the first professional blogger from India and has 25k+ readers with uncountable hits per day. His feeds are being watched by everyone , from a college student to a professional of IT industry .

Oh ! I forget to tell you his name . Actually , I am his biggest fan on the planet and am completely obsessed with him.

This blogger is Amit Agrawal of Labnol ( Digital Inspiration ) . I am quite sure that , I don't need to tell you about him . Who doesn't know him !!!

My Favorite Blogs #1

( Now , I am going to write a complete series on my favorite Blogs and bloggers . This is the first in the series . )

If I asked you about your favorite blogs , most of you will start naming those common tech blogs like Techmeme , TechCrunch , proBlogger .... and so on .

But , I don't wait for posts from these blogs with as eager as I do for posts from a very less known non-tech blog , called Coffee With Sundar ( CWS ) .

It is a blog just based on the format of popular chat show of Indian television , "Coffee with Karan" . It has guest from all possible dimensions and the blogger , Sundar Rajan G S takes their interviews . Sundar is a NIT Trichi passed out......and has got selection into CAT for IIM , after working for Google .

I simply love CWS , because it introduces some very new people and talks about their success story , which is quite inspirational for me .

Endorsement of Tropicana By IMA and 7 Indians among top 100 Intellectuals

This is going to be again a non-IT post, but it deserves to be published on my blog. The latest issue of influential “Foreign Policy” magazine has identified the world’s Top 100 “Public Intellectuals”. In its second such exercise, India comes out shining too. The list includes 7 Indians. Historian Ramachandra Guha, political psychologist Ashis Nandy and Environmentalist Sunita Narain are the four who live in India. Four other Indians based outside also make the list - : Economist Amartya Sen, journalist Fareed Zakaria and novelist Salman Rushdie.

Sunita Narain is among the two Environmentalist included in the list. I watch her in a show on NDTV 24x7 last night. The debate was on the endorsement of Pepsico - product “Tropicana” By IMA: Indian Medical Association. No doubt, Sunita was against this move of IMA.

I am also on her side, because an endorsement by IMA means endorsement by Doctors. And should a doctor endorse a product from Pepsi? Fizzy or carbonated drinks from Pepsi will certainly gain from this endorsement, yet the Tropicana is claimed to be purely natural juice, even un-sweeten! IMA has approved many other products like Dettol : the household germicide.

BigB, BigAdda and Blog

As, the world was celebrating RSS day on the 1st may (I knew it quite later) the Indian superstar Amitabh Bachchan announced to start a blog. You can check it here .

I saw an interview of Big B on TV , in which he was claiming that blogs have become a need for him , as he can connects to his fans directly now and clarify the rumours about "him" ( I think he mean Ash ) .

The domain name of blog also says something which forced me to write this post. Big B’s blog is hosted on BigAdda a social networking site promoted by Anil Ambani's ADAG - Adlabs. World know that Anil is close friend of Big B (but not as closer as Amar Singh) and hence, here is a friend for the support of other's venture.

India’s largest multiplex chain, Adlabs is going for a re-branding exercise like Hutch, to get common name with the group’s other entertainment ventures such as FM radio, music and movie production. In coming days all 54 multiplexes of Adlabs across the India would be named as “Big Cinema”.

The another bollywood actor who is famous for his blogs is Aamir Khan, who started his blog during the production of his movie "Laggan”. I have also heard about the homepages of John Abraham and Ritiek Roshan, but never try even to google them.

(PS: - Kareena said in a press conference: " I am not size Zero”. One friend has rated my size as Size 8. Thanking him for his rating and no more posts about movie stars now! )

Kya aap paanchvi pass se tez hain ?

I can't have enough time for watching television . Whenever the remote is in my hand , I watch News Channels . I don't watch enough of movies as well . My favorite ones are from Bollywood , specailly the Shahrukh Khan . Recently , he has started hosting a Quiz Show for Star Plus .

The title of the show is very interesting : "Kya aap paanchvi pass se tez hain ?" ( Are you more intelligent than a class 5th passed kid ? , Am I right at translation ) .

As the title was attractive and fortunately my aunt got a chance in the show ( presently , she is waiting for her audition results ) , I decided to watch it regularly . But , the contestants disappointed me . Their knowledge level was so down that I have to quit my Idea to watch the show because this has made the show very boring .

Divya Iyer Has written about the conversation between shahrukh and a participant from Bangalore ( the third episode ) . Read it here .

UPDATE : A nice translation of "Kya aap paanchvi pass se tez hain ?" is "Are you smarter than a fifth grader" . Moreover , Its a copy of the US show 'Are you smarter than a fifth grader' !! Thanks http://snippetsnscribbles.wordpress.com/

OrkutFeeds.com : Best Orkut Solution

While the MySpace has launched its Indian Website at URL in.myspace.com , most of us , the Indians , love Orkut and Orkutting is just a craze among ( specially ) college students . Most of you must have different alternative to post and read orkut ScrapBooks , if Orkut is blocked in your college or office .

Many people simply choose a bypass or proxysites like Polysolve ( Visit http://proxysites.org/ for more ) . Some Other choose PowerScrap . But , sadly Web administrator are sometime cleverer and they have banned the above sites or services too .

Don't worry Yaar ! There is solution to every problem . I am quite sure that atleast mail services are not blocked at any office or college labs . So , here is Mr. Rahul Bansal of Devils Workshop with his venture OrkutFeeds.com .

It is a FREE service which enables users to subscribe any public scrapbook on Orkut network . You can read your ( or anyone's else ) scrapbook just like any other RSS feed , in the same manner as you read RSS feeds of blogs . You have both options here : mailbox and feedreaders ! I mean that , you can opt for delivery of new items in your e-mail inbox and you can also opt for regular RSS readers . Hence you can read your new scrap entries in your mailbox , easily without using any headache of proxysites etc .

Is it not cool ? You must praise Rahul .
Another very HOT Update about Orkut is that it has gone mobile silently @ http://m.orkut.com/ . A very surprising thing , noticed by my favorite Blogger Amit Agrawal is that the RSS feeds you subscribed in Orkut May Have Gone Missing ! ( Read More )

Virgle

on 1st April , a post on Google's Official blog By Sir Richard Branson ( founder of Virgin Group ) surprised me a lot . This was regarding the annousement of Virgle : the joint venture of Virgin and Google .

This may seem as a usual tie-up of two groups , but it is not just that . It is very far behind it .

Sir Branson describes the project Virgle as ,

"Virgle's goal is simple: the establishment of a permanent human settlement on Mars. Larry Page, Sergey Brin and I feel strongly that contemporary technology is sufficiently advanced to make such an effort both successful and economical, and that it's high time that humanity moved beyond Earth and began our great, long journey to explore the stars and establish our first lasting foothold on another world."

It shows that the eyes of Google & Virgin are on future .

Tapan Parikh

From Sabeer Bhatia in 1999 to Sangeeta Bhatia in 2003, Indians have figured on the honours list of Technology Review (TR) year after year. Since 1999, the world’s oldest technology magazine, published by MIT, has been identifying the TR35 — a unique group of young innovators under 35 years of age, who are handpicked for their groundbreaking research that’s changing people’s lives. It’s an exclusive club that includes the likes of Marc Andreessen, co-founder of Netscape; Jonathan Ive, designer of the iMac, and Mark Zuckerberg (2007) for Facebook. The 7th Class of Outstanding Innovators this year has four Indians, each of whom represents TR’s quest for excellence in technology of the future...

TAPAN PARIKH | MOBILE TOOLS FOR DEVELOPING ECONOMIES
His mobile phone-based tool called CAM is changing the way small businesses function in developing countries. It’s an application toolkit that allows users to capture data from paper-based manual processes that are ubiquitous in India. ‘‘It’s an integrated mobile phone framework for delivering a variety of services in villages,’’ Parikh says. A P
hD student in computer sciences at the University of Washington, Parikh has spent half his time in graduate school travelling around India and working with the people who would use his technology. His journey began in 2000, when dissatisfied with pure research, the New Yorker left academia and travelled to his parents’ homeland. Here he developed a new focus for his research. CAM helps self-help groups in micro-finance to document their operations, which allows them to make informed decisions and access more capital. In agriculture, it helps small farming cooperatives maintain strict standards enforcing quality and various certification requirements. ‘‘The goal is to create a more stable, empowered economy in rural India based on community-owned businesses,’’ says Parikh. On being chosen the ‘Humanitarian of the Year’, he says: ‘‘It’s exciting when your work is recognised as promising. I hope to live up to that promise.’’ Parikh continues his work with NGOs in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu.

What has happened to the janta? They’ve thrown out hot favourite Meiyang Chang. The result came as a blow to Chang, who was in a state of shock when his name was announced. After all, his performance in the gala was one of his best. Alisha was so shaken by the result that she walked off the stage in protest! Later she returned at Chang’s request and gifted him her favourite cap. Chang was in tears as he sang his last song. Everybody was crying for the talented guy.

Well , I hope that He will have a great singing career !! May god bless him !!! Read Entire Post and Comment>

A post by Amit Agrawal !

Hi Guys !!

Here is a post by Famous blogger Mr. Amit Agrawal ( http://labnol.blogspot.com/ ) >

Back in December, we carried a detailed comparison of Blip.tv vs YouTube for uploading video content on the web. Blip.tv won over YouTube by a huge margin because Blip supported most video formats, had no limitation on file sizes and maintained the original video quality unlike YouTube which resize clips to 320x240.

While YouTube uses Flash 7 (Sorensen Spark codec), most other sites encode using On2 VP6 codec of Flash 8 which results in more sharp video.

The current issue of PC World has a detailed comparison of almost all popular video sharing websites and Blip.tv has emerged as a clear winner again - it beats YouTube in video quality, audio quality, video encoding speed and the wide screen Flash video player that makes watching videos all the more fun.

Infact, YouTube also lost the race to Brightcove, Revver, Veoh and Microsoft SoapBox. While none of these sites have the millions of eyeballs like YouTube for your videos to go viral, when it comes to video quality and speed, most of them fared bared that YouTube in the comparison.

So if you want to embed high-quality video content with your readers (especially screencasts with text), Blip.tv is the way to go. They even offer advertising with a 50/50 split. And not just video clips. Blip is also a recommended destination for uploading MP3 music and podcasts.
