Google’s browser has just celebrated its third birthday, and here comes a birthday gift from India! Chrome has surpassed Internet Explorer in India, and now it is the second most popular browser in the country with 31.75% browser market share.
According to the report of StatCounter.com, Firefox is the most popular browser in India with 32.97% market share. IE and Chrome have 31.33% & 31.75% users respectively.

If we consider individual browser versions, Chrome 13 is the most popular browser version in India with 21.28% usage share. This should be noted here that Chrome updates automatically, and it is considered as the most important feature of Chrome.

I believe that there are three main reasons behind this success: Advertisements, promotion through other Google services and Support for Windows XP (XP is not supported by IE9+). In past few months, Google has promoted Chrome specially on TV channels. TV is the most effective medium in India, and this promotion may be a reason behind Chrome’s increasing user base. Here is one such ad:
the web is what you make of it: Archana’s Kitchen
Browser war is at its peak in India, and I hope that the Chrome is going to become #1 browser in India by the end of this year. Happy Birthday, Chrome!

do you know which is the most popular operating sys in India? it is (PIRATED) WINDOWS XP.
Internet Explorer 9 does not support XP and this is why Internet Explorer is going to loose users in India.
interesting information. Surprised to see that Mozilla is number one in India. Hope it will stay there.
should we trust reports of statcounter.com?
I like using XP and IE but IE9 doesn’t support XP,so I still stay with IE8 and Avant browser.I also use firefox and chrome occasionally. Personally, I prefer chrome to firefox ,bacause firefox always takes a long time to start up no matter in which version .I don’t why. But its add-ons are attractive. Chrome is really fast.
I actually really liked that Google commercial. I want that food now.
Another major factor in this may be the built-in Google Translate and its very strong support for many languages in India. Google is also working hard on transliteration for Indic languages.

@ Puneet Sharma, right on target. Since XP isn’t supported by IE9, it has lost market share in India. Though it is a good thing :D
Also, the aggressive bundling of chrome with a lot of installers, and advertisements on TV channels has also contributed to the growth of chrome. Though i wish that firefox stays in the lead, but the figures don’t look too good for it. Also, while on it, firefox’s new rapid version changing sucks.
The most popular is IE and Mozila Firefox.
