What is a Chrome web app?

Google Chrome stable channel has just hit version 9. This update is available on all platforms. Chrome 9 has got many security fixes and exciting Chrome Web Store. Chrome users can install web apps from this gallery.

What is a web app?

Earlier, we posted about the differences between extensions and web apps. The following video by Chrome team also introduces web apps:

 

 

In general, web apps are the web-based applications. Gmail may be an example of web app. You will notice that most of the apps available in Web Store are just a bookmark to these existing services.

Moreover, there is a different category of web apps. These apps, called Packaged Apps, are applications utilising technologies like HTML5, JavaScript, CSS etc., and run locally in web browsers. Packaged Apps are not just bookmarks. A typical example of packaged app is Scribble.
