First of all, it is not a complete extension yet and requires access to experimental APIs of Chrome. Further, the purpose of this extension is to prove the power of Chrome APIs than anything else.
Chrome Desktop Search is a Chrome extension, based on experimental APIs including Omnibox API and Infobars API. It uses the latest features available in Chrome, like the ability to access file:/// URLs. It works similar to Google Desktop Search, where users can allow indexing of local files & folders and search them right from the browser (Chrome in this case).
To try this extension, follow these steps:
- Enable experimental APIs in Chrome. Read more here.
- Install the extension from this page.
- Enter chrome://extensions in the address bar to visit the extension manager, and allow access to file URLs for Desktop Search extension. (see the following screenshot)

- Browse any file URL from the omnibar, like file:///C:/. You will notice an alert message to index the current location. Press the infobar button to crawl it.

- You are ready to see the magic! Now, you just have to type stuff in the omnibox to search. Prefix your queries with "fs " to run desktop search command.

cool! Well done, antimatter15. :)
