Goo.gl URL Shortening Service Is Available for Public Use Now

Google has announced public availability of its URL shortening service, Goo.gl. This service was only available to the users of few Google services like Google Toolbar and FeedBurner in past. Anyone can create a Goo.gl short url from the home page of this service: http://goo.gl/.

Google said in blog post, "There are many shorteners out there with great features, so some people may wonder whether the world really needs yet another. As we said late last year, we built goo.gl with a focus on quality. With goo.gl, every time you shorten a URL, you know it will work, it will work fast, and it will keep working. You also know that when you click a goo.gl shortened URL, you’re protected against malware, phishing and spam using the same industry-leading technology we use in search and other products."

We have already posted about the faster perfomance of Goo.gl service, and its uptime is around 100% since its launch. Users can also track the click stats now, which was not available in the past.

Bookmarklet And Extensions for Goo.gl

As this service was not available for the public use in past, there was no official tool to create goo.gl short links. But many developers had already created several browser extensions to generate Goo.gl short urls. For Firefox users, Firefox Lite is the best existing add-on. You can read our review here.
If you are looking for a bookmarklet or a plain simple way to create Goo.gl short links (specially on mobile devices), I have created this goo.gl tool. You can use the provided bookmarklet for creating goo.gl short urls quickly, which works for all platforms and browsers including Firefox, Safari, Opera and Chrome.
