LibreOffice – OpenOffice.org Community Adopts New Brand Name

As Oracle has acquired OpenOffice.org assets as a result of its acquisition of Sun Microsystems, the volunteers behind this open source project have announced to form "The Document Foundation". The OpenOffice.org community has invited Oracle to join their movement and donate the brand to the community.

Since Oracle has not decided anything regarding this, the community has adopted brand “LibreOffice” to continue its activities. The LibreOffice can be downloaded from the website of newly formed "The Document Foundation". Currently, only Beta version of the LibreOffice is available for download, which is not intended for production use and only for the preview.

The Document Foundation says about the future, "We want The Document Foundation to be open to code contributions from as many people as possible. We are delighted to announce that the enhancements produced by the Go-OOo team will be merged into LibreOffice, effective immediately. We hope that others will follow suit. LibreOffice is The Document Foundation’s reason for existence. We do not have and will not have a commercial product which receives preferential treatment. We only have one focus – delivering the best free office suite for our users – LibreOffice."
