Twitter has already introduced own short URL service, twt.tl, for direct messages in March and now the leading social networking site is going to have own URL shortening service for all links shared through twitter.
The company said in a post on official blog that this service is aimed to detect, intercept, and prevent the spread of malware, phishing, and other dangers. This URL shortening service is already live for few accounts for testing purposes, and hosted on the domain name t.co.

Bit.ly will Die?
Twitter is currently using bit.ly as its default URL shortening service for long URLs. Once, t.co will be rolled out to all users, certainly, it will affect bit.ly and other URL shortening services. Although, twitter says:
If you are already partial to a particular shortener when you tweet, you can continue to use it for link shortening and analytics as you normally would, and we’ll wrap the shortened links you submit.
This means that the users are free to use their own URL shortening services, and Twitter will still wrap up these links so that users will not miss hits analysis and other details.
