Google Chrome Extension Gallery Needs Moderation!

Chrome extension gallery is currently hosting an extension “ESET Key Finder”, which claims its feature as: Find the keys for antivirus ESET Smart Security and NOD32. Daily keys updating. Certainly, this extension is promoting software piracy by providing hacked keys of ESET NOD32, the popular premium antivirus program.

This incident confirms that the Google Chrome extension gallery needs moderation. Submitted extensions should be reviewed before appearing in the gallery so that the inappropriate extensions get filtered out. Mozilla runs an Add-on Review Program for the submitted add-ons for Firefox, Thunderbird etc. An editor checks and approves features of add-ons and other similar issues – and before approval, the add-on is marked as “Experimental”. Mozilla warns users before installing such experimental add-ons.

Chrome should implement a similar review program. Imagine the worse situation: Suppose a developer (OK, spammer) creates and submits an extension which hurts users in anyway.
