The most revolutionary product, launched on the first day of Google I/O conference 2010, is WebM. It will change the world of videos over the Internet. Well, the WebM is still under development and not supported by any browser (stable version) at the moment. To try WebM videos on YouTube – you need to download a Firefox nightly build, which has the initial support for WebM video streaming.
How To Play A WebM Video On YouTube?
(big thanks to Alex for the tip.)
- Download and install the WebM supported Firefox nightly build from here.
- Sign up for HTML5 experiment on YouTube. Visit this page, and click the “Join HTML5 beta”. More information here.
- As all YouTube videos don’t support WebM, you need to search such a video. Try the following link to search a YouTube video with WebM support:
http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=web&webm=1.
(or, watch this video)
- Open any video from the search result page. You will notice that the video is not using Flash or HTML5 + H.264. The video player will be showing up the format: "HTML5 * WEBM". :)
Hence, you can play WebM supported videos on YouTube. Cheers!

Firefox 5 and above already support WebM videos by default. You don’t need to download “WebM supported Firefox nightly build” as described in step #1.
Thanks for the article, Arpit.
