Canonical, the company behind Linux based operating system: Ubuntu, is considering a new default browser for UNR. The Ubuntu Netbook Remix (UNR) is Ubuntu’s special version, optimized for netbooks and similar small screen devices. Currently, Ubuntu and UNR – both have Firefox as their default browser.

Chromium is an open source browser, and Google Chrome is based on it. Canonical is considering Chromium because of many reasons, including its sleeker and minimal interface – which is well suited for netbooks. Firefox is always blamed for eating system resources – and Chromium (i.e.; Chrome) is appreciated for being a light weight browser.
Firefox has been the default browser for most of the Linux based operating systems for ages, but it seems that its slow development and slower performance are providing an opportunity to the other browsers.

I love Firefox, Opera and Google Chrome.
I’m using Google Chrome 6.0.401.1 dev and find they are already ready for prime time.
So by Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.10 they should be more than ready.
My only problem with Chromium (like Chrome) is that it does not encrypt passphrases. Opera and Firefox do. For this reason (only) would I need to have another browser available.
