YouTube.com ‘s New Design, YouTube Downloader Add-ons Dead!

by Arpit Kumar on 1 April 2010

TechCrunch is reporting that the YouTube.com’s new design will be enabled to all users soon. This experimental layout is currently served to many users randomly, and the video page overhaul is the biggest redesigns in YouTube’s history.

YouTube.com New Design

Of course, this new design has many new eye-catching features like a brand new sidebar, but I have discovered one serious problem with it: Almost all Firefox add-ons (and greasemonkey scripts) to download YouTube videos in FLV, MP4, HD formats are not working on the new video page. According to developer Gantt, who maintains popular userscript "Download YouTube videos As MP4", the new layout is very complicated for add-on developers. He says:

Changing the script for the new layout is quite complicated because YouTube uses a lot of Ajax and I couldn’t find a way to inject the script when you open a new video. [ ]

How To Download YouTube Videos Now?

Thankfully, there are several other hacks to download YouTube videos. I am not very sure if other ways would be affected with the new design changes. One easiest option is KeepVid.com’s bookmarklet. Let’s hope it would continue to work.

Yeah…I have also tried using other sites..but failed.

Try DownloadHelper – an addon for Firefox, it can download Flash videos played in the browser and thus you can download them even if there is no download link

Try Youtubemp (http://blog.arpitnext.com/youtubemp) Beta version, Which works fine with the newer layout of YouTube.com

You should check out FlashPlus – A google Chrome Extenion for Flash Videos and Games. It allows you to resize or move videos, darken the background or pop out to a new window. IT means you can tile the windows and watch a movie on the left while filling out that boring report on the right side of the screen. I guess this extension is not rendered obselete yet :)

Try Firefox add-on “1-click Youtube Video Downloader”. It works with the new layout.

Most of those are for Firefox. Any for us, IE and Safari?

Downloader9.com just modified their script and it works on the new YouTube layout. You can even download the videos in 3 different formats (3GP, FLV and MOV) and up to 1280×720 resolution. Go try it.
