US Internet Service Provider Redirecting DNS For Google Toolbar Search Queries In Firefox

According to a post on DSLReports.com, an Internet Service Provider (ISP) based on the East Coast of the US has been found redirecting DNS for the search queries from the Google Toolbar in Firefox. Windstream, the US ISP, is found to be serving own search result pages for the queries sent from Google’s Firefox Toolbar, even if user has opted for OpenDNS or another similar DNS provider.

After getting complaints from users, Windstream has apologized for this incident and has promised to resolve this issue soon.

Google Toolbar is a Firefox add-on created by Google, which integrates many Google services on a separate toolbar for Firefox users.

Generally, ISPs use DNS redirects to take the user to own page when DNS can not be resolved. This helps ISPs to generate extra revenue. But, hijacking all search result pages is certainly not acceptable. :(
