Twitter To Replace MySQL By Cassandra

Twitter is going to replace its MySQL database system with Cassandra, the Open Source distributed database management system started by Facebook. Ryan King, a software engineer at Twitter, confirmed this in an interview with MyNoSQL.

Cassandra - Twitter to replace MySQL

Ryan is the lead engineer on this project. He said:

We’re currently moving our largest table — the statuses table, which contains all tweets and retweets. After this we’ll start putting some new projects on Cassandra and migrating other tables.

Cassandra is getting popular rapidly, and many big websites like Digg, Facebook and Rackspace have already switched to it. The Open Source data management system project, Cassandra, was initially developed by Facebook to handle their inbox search capabilities, and later it was released as an Open Source project. Since then, Cassandra is growing.

Ryan explained the reason for switching as the huge and growing database of twitter. He told, "We have a lot of data, the growth factor in that data is huge and the rate of growth is accelerating."  According to Ryan, the top reasons to go with Cassandra include highly scalable writes and a healthy open source community behind the project.
