Google Groups in Google Wave

by Arpit Kumar on 9 December 2009

Google Wave recently introduced a new feature: now you can integrate any Google group to Wave. This functionality enables you to bring group conversations to Wave.

Though, we have seen Invity – a Wave robot to create groups of contacts in Wave but this new feature simplifies our task by bringing all existing contacts of a group to Wave.

How to set Google groups in Google Wave?

  • Set Access Permissions (for Group owners): If you own a group, you can set access permission of that group from setting panel. All your settings for the Google Wave will be respected in Wave too. (i.e.; a group open to public can be viewed by anyone in Wave.)
  • Add Google Group to Wave contacts: As you know, all Google groups have their unique email address, like xyzgroup@googlegroups.com. Add email id of the desired group as a contact in Wave.
  • Done!

Remember that group waves conversations will only show up in Google Wave, and not in the Google Groups interface.

How to search for group conversations in Wave?

Google Wave supports advance search operators. You can use operator group: to search for conversations/waves with a particular group. For example, search query group:xyzpqr@googlegroups.com will result all wave conversations related to group xyzpqr@googlegroups.com.
