Bookmarklet To Create goo.gl Short URLs In Firefox, Opera, Chrome And Other Browsers

by Arpit Kumar on 18 December 2009

Google recently launched own URL shortening service: goo.gl. This service is not open for “broader consumer use” yet and is (officially) available only with Google Toolbar and Feedburner.

Thankfully, Google Chrome has got great attention from developers and now there are several extensions for Chrome to create a goo.gl short URL from a long link. Unfortunately, Firefox (and Opera, Safari, IE etc) users have just one choice for creating goo.gl URLs – installing Google Toolbar, as there is no add-on or bookmarklet available.

But, the wait is over and now we have a bookmarklet for Firefox, Opera, Chrome and other browsers to create goo.gl short URLs just with a single mouse click! You don’t need to install any add-on or browser extension, just drag this bookmarklet/favlet to your bookmarks toolbar:

goo.gl bookmarklet

You can see this code at developer Matthew Flaschen’s site (link to .js file). I have tested it on Firefox, Opera and Chrome and it works smoothly. As you hit the bookmarklet, an alert box will appear with the shortened URL (see screenshot). You can simply copy it.
