301Works.org Will Take Care Of Short URLs If Site Shuts Down

We use different URL shortening services for creating short (and meaningful) URLs. These services help us in sharing links with others, specially on micro-blogging sites (like twitter). Bit.ly, TinyURL,u.nu and many such websites are now an integral part of our online life. But, imagine if any of these sites shuts down :( – it will kill all those short links!

To avoid such painful conditions, a group of URL shortening companies have launched the project – 301Works.org.

Participating companies will provide regular backups of their URL mappings to the 301Works.org . In the event of the closure of a participating organization, technical control of the shortening service domain will be transferred to 301Works.org in order to continue redirecting existing shortened URLs to their intended destinations.

This project will take care of all short URLs even if any of the participating company shuts down. Great initiative! Bit.ly, awe.sm, twurl.nl and many other service providers are already part of this project.
