Read WordPress.com Blogs In Your (Jabber) IM Client

WordPress is in news these days, for two major reasons. We saw that the self-hosted WordPress blogs are under security risk and later Matt Mullenweg advised users to upgrade (Read : Robert Scoble feel unsafe). The second big news was addition of a new feature : rssCloud.

The rssCloud is basically a way for people to get push notifications for updates. But, unfortunately Google Reader and FeedDemon (and other popular clients) are not supporting rssCloud at this time.

[ Lazyfeed has announced that it will integrate rssCloud soon ]

To read a WordPress.com blog (i.e.; hosted with WordPress.com, and not just xyz.wordpress.com) in your IM client, you need to use a Jabber based client like Gtalk or Pidgin.

  • Add bot@im.wordpress.com to your buddy list.
  • To subscribe a blog send command sub blogurl. Hence, to subscribe the official WP blog send sub en.blog.wordpress.com
  • For help send command help
  • To unsubscribe send unsub blogurl
  • To see the list of current subscriptions send subs

This bot will update you in real time. :)

This im bot does not support self-hosted WordPress blogs (like mine). Still, there are few popular blogs which are hosted with WordPress.com (like Scobleizer, Gigaom). You can see this list of top blogs hosted with WordPress.com.
