Aditya – ISRO Plans Mission To Sun

After Chandrayaan - The India’s mission to the Moon, ISRO is planning for its next big project.

This time the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is aiming for the Sun. ISRO’s next project Aditya (meaning Sun in the Sanskrit) will be launched in the year 2012 to study the solar corona.

Aditya, the space craft, will have a lifespan of ten years and will weigh 100 kilogram. Aditya is billed as the most advanced satellite after SOHO (Solar And Heliospheric Observatory) which was launched by NASA in 1995. Another similar satellite would be NASA’s Probe Plus – which will follow Aditya after six years in 2018.
ISRO Aditya
Aditya is a joint project of ISRO, Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) and Physical Research laboratory (PRL). Scientists have taken some crucial inputs to determine features of Aditya on the total solar eclipse of 22nd July 2009.
