6 Cool Ways To Use Twitter With Thousands Of Friends

How can you follow those thousands of people on twitter?

It is impossible to follow even hundred people on twitter. So, you need some trick to avoid unwanted people. I have six suggestions to filter your friends timeline and reduce the “noise” on twitter :

  • Use TweetDeck : You can create groups of selected friends. Easiest way to avoid everyone else on twitter. It is an Adobe AIR based desktop app. You need to install it on your computer and hence, you can’t access it from anywhere. :(
  • Use Twalala : I highly recommend this undiscovered web based client. Twalala provides option to mute unwanted tweeps. As it is web based, you can access it from anywhere.
  • Use Mixero : Mixero is currently in private beta, hence you need to request for invitation. I use mixero as my default twitter client. It has many great features, with creation of groups with selected twitter friends. All the data and settings are  synchronized and hence everything stays with you on any PC, mobile phone or browser. Must try it.
  • Use your RSS Reader – It is not a real time idea. Yet, it is very helpful if you are not very active on twitter. Subscribe to the RSS feeds of twitter updates of your friends (or, other important persons).

Recommended RSS reader is FeedDemon (beta 3) which has nice integration for twitter.

It enables users to create public or private groups on twitter. groups  can follow a twitter user – hence, the updates of that user will be automatically posted in the group.

I have created a private tweetknot group with selected tweeps. The interface of tweetknot also shows my entire friends timeline. Hence, I can focus on selected friends. :)

  • Follow Keywords : If you are not interested in social features of twitter and just want to get latest updates about a topic from twitter – it would be better to follow keywords. Almost every twitter client has option for it, or simply visit twitter search site for lookup.

At the end, I would suggest you the best (but, would you follow this?) way to reduce twitter noise – Follow only few people! Twitter is not a competition. ;)
