Cuil : Biggest Search Engine ?

by Manish Singh on 11 August 2008

Have you ever imagined that something can replace Google in our life ? Surely , Google is the most powerful tool on Internet . But  as  To Change is the only Constant Law of Nature , and here is something which claims to challenge Google .

It is a brand new Search Engine : Cuil .

Cuil ( pronounced as cool, Irish for knowledge ) is a new search engine , launched on 28th July with 120 billion pages or ‘thrice‘ of the Google’s index. It has been founded and developed by husband-wife duo of Stanford professor Tom Costello and former Google search architect Anna Patterson.

Now , How Cuil is different from Google ? Here are some cool features of Cuil :

  • Biggest Internet search engine—Cuil has indexed 120+ billion Web pages, 3x more than any other search engine.
  • Organized results—Cuil’s magazine-style layout separates results by subject and allows further search by concept or category .
  • Different results—Unlike other search engines, Cuil ranks results by the content on each page, not its popularity.
  • Complete privacy protection—Cuil does not keep any personally identifiable information on users or their search histories.

Some More Features can be seen here . Twiceler is the name of Cuil ‘s robot Web crawler.

Before composing this post , I spend more than 1 hour with Cuil and have concluded that , whatever claims are made by the founders , the search quality of Cuil is very poor . Still , it deserves a try !
:)

Cuil is definitely going for it, but it’s hard to imagine them doing anything but incremental changes to what Google’s done. And even that would take years of effort.BR/BR/Me.dium.com has taken a different tack. We have a full web index, but we change the results based on the surfing activity of our user base (now over 2,000,000). It’s in alpha, but I’d be curious to hear your thoughts. http://me.dium.com/search
