New IITs and IIMs



As The UPA Government has imposed OBC reservation on the talented young minds of India , it was desirable to open New IITs and IIMs across the country . And , Government has proposed some new IITs and IIMs . It released an official press notice regarding the location of new IITs and other central institutes for higher education. According to this notice , 8 new IITs and 7 new IIMs are going to be started . Location of 4 IITs (in Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar and Himachal Pradesh), and one IIM (at Shillong) have already been announced. The Central Government has now decided to locate the remaining 4 IITs and 6 IIMs in the following States :-

  • IITs – Orissa, Madhya Pradesh (Indore), Gujarat and Punjab.
  • IIMs – Tamil Nadu, Jammu & Kashmir, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh (Raipur), Uttarakhand and Haryana In addition, it is also proposed to convert the Institute of Technology of the Banaras Hindu University into an IIT. Admission to this Institute is already based on the IIT – Joint Entrance Examination ( JEE ) .

This is perfectly balanced list .

IIT Gujrat with 120 seats, will start functioning from the Gandhinagar Engineering College, Chandkheda, from the coming academic session.The sanctioned institute will have 40 seats each in mechanical, electrical, and chemical streams and award a four-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) degree.The Chandkheda campus is already hosting an extension centre of the IIT-Powai (Mumbai) that conducts short-term high-end courses for mid-career engineering professionals in Gujarat’s industries.Though the state is not sure of when and where the new campus of IIT-Gujarat will come up, the government announced that it will try to locate it on the “knowledge corridor” between Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad.

Indian Institute of Technology, Rajasthan would start functioning from the campus of IIT-Kanpur from the academic session 2008-09. This arrangement would continue for the next three years. Along with IIT-K, Prof Sanjay Govind Dhande would also be the director for IIT-R.

The other new IITs would also function in a similar manner.

Previously , Government was working on Upgrading some prominent institutes to IITs . These Institutes were : Institute of Technology BHU Varanasi ; University College of Engineering combined with University College of Technology, both belonging to the Osmania University; Bengal Engineering College Howrah; Jadavpur University’s engineering and technology departments; Zakir Hussain College of Engineering and Technology, AMU Aligarh; Andhra University College of Engineering; and Cochin University of Science and Technology.

Well , Hoping that these new Institutes will get academic excellence and young Talent will get much care by the Government .
